StarMUD can be reached through telnet at starmud.com on port 4000 (StarMUD's IP address changed Tue 17 Apr 2007 so if for some reasons telnet starmud.com 4000 doesn't work, try telnet 72.179.41.89 4000 instead). There are many clients which can be used to access StarMUD, we recommend a basic telnet client such as PuTTY or a dedicated MUD client such as zMUD or TinyFugue. Alternatively, if you are not able, or do not wish to install software on the computer you would like to access StarMUD from, you may use our web-based Java client.

Fozboz has written a guide for new players which can be found at his website.

Logging in

Email address

Upon first connecting to StarMUD, you will be asked to provide an email address. If you already have an account, enter the email address of your account at the prompt. If you are logging in to StarMUD for the first time, enter the email address you wish to use for your account. If you choose to make multiple characters, they will all be required to use the same email address. Though we do not typically verify email addresses, they are required on all characters. Any character with an email address deemed to be fake may be removed from the MUD at any time. StarMUD does not share the email addresses of its players with anyone outside of the MUD, nor do we typically send email to our players unless necessary to notify people of outages, so you need not worry about spam. Upon entering a new email address it will ask you to verify yes or no with 'y' or 'n'.

Password

After you enter your email address, you will be prompted for a password. If you are a returning player, enter the password you chose at the prompt. If you are logging in for the first time, type in the password you would like to use. Please make sure you pick a password that is something you will be able to easily remember, but is not easily guessed. Passwords must be at least six characters long, and have at least one none letter. Intermixing letters and numbers is a good idea. Upon entering a new password, it will ask you to re-enter it to verify.

Math test

After selecting your password you will be prompted with a simple math problem. This, unfortunately, had to be added due to abuse with players writing automated scripts to make many characters very quickly. Simply enter the solution to the problem presented and you will be taken to the next step.

Account interface

The third stage in logging in to StarMUD is the account interface. If you already have an account, you may choose which character you wish to log in as by number, as listed. The interface also offers many other commands accessed by letter:

C - Create a new character.
E - Change the email address of your account.
W - See who is logged into StarMUD, their rank, and their idle time.
L - Link an already existing character on StarMUD to your account.
P - Change your password.
? - Repeat the commands menu.
# - Make your email address display in your finger information public or private.
Q - Quit from StarMUD.

Character creation

To create a new character, you would select the 'c' command at the prompt. Upon entering the command, you will be asked to provide a name for your new character. This is what you will be known as in the game, so pick something you don't mind being called by all the other players.

ANSI

After selecting a name you will be asked if your client supports ANSI. StarMUD supports displaying of text in various colors, and most modern clients are able to interpret and display them properly, but if you are unsure, please select no ('n').

Web page

Next the interface will prompt you for your web page address, or any other information you would like to display in your finger profile. This is entirely optional. If you have a web page you wish to publicize, enter it at the prompt. If you do not wish to enter anything, just hit enter.

Real name

Again, another entirely optional entry for your finger profile. Some players like to put in their real first name, other people prefer to be entirely anonymous when playing StarMUD. Some people put the name of their primary character. Enter what you wish to be displayed, or simply hit enter if you do not wish to have anything displayed as your real name.=

Species

Now comes the more complicated part. Selecting a species, sometimes called a race, for your character. By typing 'list' at the prompt, you can get a list of all available species on StarMUD. There are many, and species choice is entirely personal prerogative; however, some species are more difficult to play than others and are denoted as such in the list. The harder to play species are typically recommended for more experienced StarMUD players. At any time before choosing a species, you may use the 'help' command to get help on any species to learn a bit about them. Once you select a species, you may find that some species have subspecies which you choose from as well. Again it is personal prerogative.

Gender

After deciding on a species, you may be prompted to pick a gender. This typically does not have much bearing on generalized game play, but it can affect how other players interact with you. Some species have limited gender choices, or are non-gendered by their very nature.

New characters

After entering the solution to the math problem, you will be prompted to answer whether you are a new player or not. We use this information to determine how people are learning about StarMUD, and just how many people are truly new players, so we appreciate that you answer the questions truthfully, and as detailed as possible. If you heard about us from another StarMUDder, please give his or her MUD name or email address so we can award them appropriately for bringing new players to the MUD. If you heard about us from a web site or MUD list, we would appreciate knowing the address to the site.

Once you have answered all the questions, you will be logged into StarMUD. If you have never played StarMUD before you may wish to read our further information on hints for those new to StarMUD. If this is your first time playing a MUD, you will probably want to read up on what a MUD is.
